Percussion

Percussion instruments allow the sound of a track to be expanded with additional rhythmic layers and subtle dynamic nuances. In session recordings, they often define the character of a production – from a gentle pulse to pronounced accents. That is why I work with a wide range of percussion instruments, selected for a specific style, arrangement and character of the track.

The foundation of many productions are instruments by Latin Percussion, which offer predictable sound and a high level of flexibility in the studio. I use different models of congas, bongos and cowbells, allowing me to achieve both warm, organic tones and more defined, percussive accents. Depending on the needs, I record individual elements or build multi-layered percussion parts, tailored to the arrangement and groove of the track.

In acoustic and more subtle productions, I often reach for cajons, including models by J. Leiva. They are characterised by a wide dynamic range, natural attack and well-controlled low end, which makes them suitable both as a main rhythmic instrument and as an additional layer supporting the drums. Cajons allow for a more organic and intimate sound without losing the energy of the track.

The setup is complemented by instruments from Rohema – claves, shakers, guiro, hot rods and various rhythmic instruments. Thanks to the variety of materials and construction, it is possible to precisely match the sound character to a specific production. Depending on the needs, I use shakers with different frequency ranges, claves with a defined attack or subtle percussion elements that add movement and space to the mix.

I record using microphones by sE Electronics, which accurately capture dynamic detail and the natural character of percussion instruments. This makes it possible to achieve a clear, spatial sound without the need for excessive processing in post-production.

Depending on the project, I also record djembe, tambourines, various types of shakers, cowbells and additional percussion elements. Each instrument is selected individually to enhance the arrangement and give the track a natural pulse and additional energy.
